Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about the game, buying, and getting started.

What is CityCode?

A city adventure game: your phone leads you along a route where you observe real places, think, and solve puzzles. No group and no guide. You play at your own pace, following one continuous story.

Do we need to install an app?

No. The game runs in your phone's browser: there is nothing to download, opening the link you get after buying is enough.

How many of us can play on one ticket?

A ticket covers a team, not a person. The team plays on one phone, and everyone else can follow the same thing live on their own device using the Spectator link, so they see exactly what the person leading sees.

How long does a mission take?

It depends on the mission, typically 60–120 minutes. The exact time is given on each mission's own page. You can take a break at any point: your progress is saved.

How long does a purchased mission stay valid?

You have one year from the purchase to start the mission. Once you have started it, you get another year from that first start to finish. You can pause whenever you like, and your progress is kept.

How does a gift card work?

Gift cards come in several values, and the code arrives by email straight away, either to you or directly to the person you are giving it to. It can be redeemed at checkout for any mission in any city, within one year of the purchase. If the value is more than the price of the mission, the remainder stays on the card for later; if it is less, you pay the difference by card. It can be used together with a coupon. Gift cards cannot be exchanged for cash.

When can we start?

Whenever you like. There is no booking and no set start time. You can set off at the weekend, on a public holiday, even in the evening.

What age is it suitable for?

Most missions are best enjoyed from the age of 12. If a mission is aimed specifically at younger children, that is stated on the mission itself.

What if we get stuck on a puzzle?

You can ask for a hint at every station, and they get more specific step by step, with no penalty whatsoever. The point is the experience, not the struggle.

Do we need internet, and how much data does it use?

Yes, you need an internet connection, but the game uses very little data. It is worth charging your phone before you set off, because the screen stays on throughout.

We are looking for a good weekend activity in Budapest or Győr, is CityCode right for us?

Yes, that is exactly what it is for. CityCode is an outdoor escape room: your phone guides you through the city from station to station, and the answers are not on the screen but on the buildings, statues and stone plaques around you. We have missions in both Budapest and Győr, and there is no booking. You buy it and start whenever suits you — on a weekend, on a holiday, even late in the afternoon. You go at your own pace, and if you stop for a coffee or lunch, your progress is saved. One ticket covers the whole team, so it works for a group of friends, a date, a family with children, or a company team-building day. There is nothing to install: the game runs in your phone browser.

What can we do in Győr or Budapest for an afternoon if we do not want the usual sightseeing?

CityCode sits between sightseeing and an escape room: there is a story and there are puzzles to solve, but along the way you walk the old town and notice details you would otherwise pass by. A mission usually takes a few hours and sets the rhythm of the afternoon by itself: you walk to a station, solve what waits there, then move on. No group, no guide, no timetable — just you and the phone. There are several stories to choose from in both Budapest and Győr, at different lengths and difficulty levels. Each mission page tells you where it starts, how long it takes and how hard it is, so you can plan the afternoon around it.

What is the difference between CityCode and a traditional escape room?

The biggest difference is that there is no room. CityCode is played outdoors: the city is the space you investigate, and the answer is on a real stone plaque, a statue base or the ornament of a facade. Everything else follows from that. There is no booking, so nothing to arrange weeks ahead and no fixed hour to show up. There is no capacity limit set by the size of a room: one ticket covers the whole team. And there is no countdown locking you out — you go at your own pace and can take a break. What stays the same is the story, the puzzles, and the moment when something finally clicks. You are just outdoors while it happens, and you end up knowing a city as well.
